Notable:

Waymo announces plans for highway testing of its AVs in Phoenix area (link). If successful and Waymo opens up highways routes to customers, this will be among the most significant AV moments of the decade.

CES wrap up: lots of AI, hydrogen, VTOL, Honda announcements (link). I was at CES for a few days and it remains the most important ‘auto’ show in the U.S., even if new car launches were minimal.

After a big Tesla bet, Hertz plans to sell 1/3 of its EV fleet (link). In Hertz's SEC docs they show their plan to reduce their EV fleet by roughly 20k units, mostly Teslas, at a loss of over $12k per vehicle.

Aurora Innovation and Continental discuss their deepening partnership (link). 'Over the last year, we drove about a million miles hauling goods for customers and we moved about 30 million tons of freight in trucks under autonomous control.'

Researchers find not all ADAS systems can identify pedestrians and alert drivers appropriately (link). Via David Z. 'Cars were not consistent internally or with one another in pedestrian detection and response, and only sparingly sounded any warnings.'

Statistics / Projections:
