Notable:

Ford's announcement of a new low-cost/reduced-part EV platform sets up a range of affordable vehicles over the next few years (link). The giga/uni-casting approach, coupled with 'sentence diagram' assembly line design, is the main cost reducer. Plus, 400-volt architecture, LFP batteries and reduction of components by 20%, fasteners by 25%, wiring by 4000 feet. We used to think of EV innovation happening at the top and then trickling down; it's how most of the evolution has gone across the major OEMs. But this changes things as it starts at the low end first.

GM flips back to AVs with a push to re-hire ex Cruise exployees (link). 'The project would be focused on autonomous cars for personal use, with the first step being development of hands-free, eyes-free driving with a human in the vehicle, and the ultimate goal being a car that can drive with no one at the wheel.' All OEMs, suppliers and ridehailing companies who dropped their AV groups will re-engage and build them back up again, particularly given the ascendancy of Waymo over the last 12 months. The value is too great and the absence of an L4 strategy is now too much for executives to bear, whether it is Wall Street analyst pressure or their own boards. This is why 2026 will feel like 2016 all over again.

AV startup Tensor claims to offer AVs for sale as personal vehicles (link). This is probably AutoX, as the trademark for Tensor is affilated with the Chinese company, but the company hasn't confirmed and instead said it is based in San Jose, CA. It would be hard for any startup to sell an L4 vehicle but especially one with no consumer trust or history such as a brand nobody's heard of before this announcement.

'GM will buy the batteries from China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology, one of the world’s largest battery makers, for about 2 years until the Detroit automaker and its Korean partner LG Energy Solution can stand up their own manufacturing of the lower-cost batteries in the U.S., according to people familiar with the plan.'
