Behind the scenes at the UAW negotiations, three young activists with the biggest impact: Chris Brooks, Jonah Furman, Ben Dictor (link). 'Furman, who had worked for Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez and was the lead singer and bassist in a Boston indie-rock band named Krill, spearheaded the union’s bare-knuckle social-media strategy, where it updated members on negotiations and frequently posted videos taunting company executives about their pay.'

Firms explore sodium batteries as an alternative to lithium (link). Via Weans. It seems like we are headed toward a three-part battery world in the coming decade, akin to premium/midgrade/regular gas pumps. At the high end remains NMC (premium), which is increasingly getting eaten up by LFP (midgrade), with sodium ion coming up as the low-cost option (regular).
In this piece on Cruise's AV network, NYT reporters note that the company's remote assistance team 'intervened to assist the company’s vehicles every 2.5 to 5 miles' (link). The company CEO Kyle Vogt responded here (link): 'The stat quoted by nyt is how frequently the AVs initiate an RA (remote assistance) session. Of those, many are resolved by the AV itself before the human even looks at things, since we often have the AV initiate proactively and before it is certain it will need help. Many sessions are quick confirmation requests (it is ok to proceed?) that are resolved in seconds. There are some that take longer and involve guiding the AV through tricky situations. Again, in aggregate this is 2-4% of time in driverless mode.'
At $139M per mile, Montreal's new REM transit system is among the world's least expensive (link). 'According to data from the Transit Costs Project at New York University’s Marron Institute, the costs of other North American transit projects are literally multiples of that...In the San Francisco Bay Area, a BART extension to Silicon Valley has faced controversy for its cost of $2.03B per mile, and is expected to serve fewer than half as many riders as are served today by the REM’s first phase alone.'

Some insights from Phil's post: AVs 5.2 times more likely to have a crash at dawn/dusk compared to HDV; AV is a factor of 3 better than HDV at mitigating run-off-road harm.
